Will Cancer Moonshot Be the Future of Cancer Research?
9 out of 10 Americans support increased funding for cancer research, however, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, only about 5% of cancer patients participate in clinical trials.
President Obama recently announced the Cancer Moonshot 2020 project, a coalition with the goal of finding vaccine-based immunotherapies against cancer. This four-year initiative aims to develop new ways to fight cancer by bringing together the resources of leading researchers and pharmaceutical companies.
Another focus of Cancer Moonshot 2020 is to increase patient collaboration and involvement in clinical research. Patients cite several deterrents to their participation such as lack of awareness, high costs and fear of receiving a placebo.
Researchers have found that educating patients can lead to a significant increase in participation. This increase is vital to making progress in cancer research, but could also potentially save the lives of participants.
